Website Navigation

When you create a website it must include an easy, consistent Site Navigation system.

You must make it easy for users to find their way around on your site. The color of navigational tools should be consistent on each page. The location of these devices should also be consistent.

It is better to provide too much in the way of navigational tools than not enough. When using images, buttons or bullets, it may help to use the alt tag to tell a user where this link will take them.

Study: Anchor Tags and Buttons

We repeat!! Whether you use simple text links, images, buttons or bullets for your navigational devices, good web design requires that their appearance and location be the same throughout your website.

An Example

Using the web page you are reading as an example, there are actually 4 navigation devices provided.

Across the top of the web page you find links to other areas of our main website.

The links on the right side of the web page are used to access the pages of this tutorial. They are always found in the same place on each web page.

Links to the main pages of the tutorial are provided at the bottom of the web page for easy access.

There is also a Next and Previous button provided towards the bottom of the page.

It may seem like we've overdone it, but unlike the rule for color (less is More), you can never have too much in the way of navigational tools on your website.
